The web has entered its second phase. The new phase is an improved web version of web 2.0. Web 2.0 is a "category of new Internet tools and technologies created around the idea that the people who consume media, access the Internet, and use the Web shouldn't passively absorb what's available; rather, they should be active contributors, helping customize media and technology for their own purposes, as well as those of their communities". Wikipedia






Web 2.0 was first mentioned in 2004. It created a huge debate as many people suggested that there is no such thing as Web 2.0 but an extension of the Web 1.0. Other people suggested that Web 1.0 and Web 2.0 are two different technologies.

The inventor of the World Wide Web Tim Berners-Lee explained that some of the supposedly defining characteristics of Web 2.0, such as collaboration and user involvement, are what the web was supposed to be about all along. He pointed out that Amazon was incorporating user-generated content (book reviews began in 1996) and REST (Representational State Transfer) in its developments long before the term Web 2.0 came into use. So in effect, we are simply at a later stage of Web 1.0.


web.JPGAfter reading a lot about Web 1.0 and Web 2.0, my opinion on this issue is that although Web 2.0 is an extension of Web 1.0, we should keep them in separate categories as they have many differences.

In his article, Tim O'Reilly states that "In the year and a half since, the term Web 2.0 has clearly taken hold, with more than 9.5 million citations in Google. But there's still a huge amount of disagreement about just what Web 2.0 means".

I have been using Skype for several years now. However, I have never thought

about its usefulness in education and especially in learning a foreign language.

Skype is a treasure in a teacher's hands. What is astonishing about this software is

that you can practice all four skills. It practices writing, speaking, listening and

reading at the same time.

The first and most amazing thing about this program is the

ability to meet people from all over the world. Students can

use Skype in their free time to chat or talk to people from

other countries. This will help them practice the language.

If your students are learning English you can create a chat room and have all your students participate. It can actually be used in the classroom as well. Students can talk to each other or even speak to students in other classes. Even more impressive is the fact that they can interact with students of their age in other countries, which means that they are given the opportunity to broaden their horizons and increase their knowledge of the world. Not to mention the unique opportunity to interact with native speakers of the language they are learning. Not only does such a process help them broaden their knowledge but it also creates a more motivating, interesting and meaningful learning environment for the students.



Skype has given me the brilliant idea to connect two classes together so that all

students can watch the students of the other class. This would enable the teachers

to organise competitions and educational games or activities, in which the students

in one class compete against the other class. Such activities appeal to students and

motivate to study more as they want to beat the other team.

Skype will allow you to:

  • network with other teachers

This is an advantage because teachers can share

their ideas with other teachers. Today, there are

several websites for teachers. These websites allow

teachers to talk to each other, exchange opinions,

share ideas and even more interestingly, they can

exchange lesson plans. A month ago, I was trying to

find a different way to explain something to students.

I found one of these websites and I was surprised by

the various ideas presented.
