What is a Wiki?

A wiki is a collection of web pages designed to enable anyone who

accesses it to contribute or modify content, using a simplified markup language.

Cunningham and Bo Leuf designed WikiWikiWeb, the first wiki in 1995, to be an open, collaborative community Website where anyone can contribute. Since then, programmers have created many wiki-inspired programs and wiki Websites. Most of these stay true to the goal of simplicity. Wikis can be used for a large variety of tasks, from personal note-taking to collaborating online, creating an internal knowledge base, assembling an online community, and managing a traditional website. The possibilities might make wikis seem like a daunting system, but commitment to simplicity makes wiki tools a breeze.

A wiki is a website where users can add, remove, and edit every page using a web browser.

It's so terrifically easy for people to jump

in and revise pages that wikis are becoming

known as the tool ofchoice for large, multiple-participant projects.

The simplest online database that could possibly work.

Wiki is a piece of server software that allows users to freely create and edit Web page content using any Web browser. Wiki supports hyperlinks and has a simple text syntax for creating new pages and crosslinks between internal pages on the fly.

Wiki is unusual among group communication mechanisms in that it allows the organization of contributions to be edited in addition to the content itself.

So a Wiki is basically similar to a website with the

difference that the Wiki does not only have members as a website but also members who are authors of the

Wiki at the same time. As authors of a website, they

can have access to almost every part of the Wiki,

that is they can add comments and change settings.

This is extremely useful as the members of Wiki can collaborate on the same site. Everybody can visit the same site and add their comments instead of sending emails to each other, which might be confusing.

Especially when people are working on a collaborative

piece of work, it might be very frustrating to try to

find out which email isthe most recent one. Therefore, through the Wiki, people can work on one website, which enables them to have the most recent and up to date information, every time they visit the Wiki.

The video clip above is one of the best I found that explains in

simple words what a Wiki is.
